Miller's Country Jams is a local Amish family owned, operated and licensed food manufacturing business located in Middlefield, Ohio.
It is a favorite source for home-style canned preserves that are distributed throughout Ohio and beyond.
Jams are made from crushed or ground fruit, resulting in a thicker spread that holds its shape but is less firm than jellies. Unlike jelly, jam is not clear, and you may find fruit chunks or particles dispersed throughout it. Jams can be prepared with and without added pectin, as fruits naturally provide it.
The main difference between store-bought and homemade jams and jellies is the ingredient quality. If you examine the ingredient list of store-bought jam or jelly, you may find that artificial flavors, food dyes, and preservatives are included.
Apple Butter is a highly concentrated form of apple sauce produced by long, slow cooking of apples with cider or water to a point where the sugar in the apples caramelizes, turning the apple butter a deep brown. The concentration of sugar gives apple butter a much longer shelf life as a preserve than apple sauce.
