Raptis Coffee is a small family owned and operated coffee roaster in Warren, Ohio, providing coffee how you like it.
The founder, Ilias Raptis has been in the coffee business since the 80's. After working as an engineer at a steel factory in the Rust Belt, he decided to go into business for himself. Raptis Coffee was created in the mid 90's at a shop under the Raptis family home. Starting small at first, they eventually started roasting their own coffee, and today have a capacity of over 1 million lbs. per year.
The Raptis factory is in downtown Warren, Ohio right off of State Route 422, where they use a fluidized-bed roaster, and a variety of grinders and packaging machines.
Why coffee?
Before immigrating to the US in the 70's, Ilias grew up on a small island in Greece by the name of Ikaria. He has vivid memories of his mother roasting coffee beans on the stove in a clay pot. His love of coffee, along with his entrepreneurial spirit, and engineering background, led to the creation of Raptis Coffee.
At the beginning they purchased whole bean coffee in bulk, ground it, and used a packaging machine to make little portion packs for local restaurants. After a few years they purchased a roaster and expanded their warehouse space.
In 1996 they moved to the current location on Main Ave in Warren. They have expanded the building, purchased a bigger roaster, more grinders and more packaging machines.
The coffees that Raptis uses are a secret, but they do not use any flavoring. It is 100% Arabica, roasted fresh daily, providing the best flavor. The coffee is packaged in bags with 1-way air valves to keep the product fresh. It is best stored in a cool, dry place. You can keep it longer in the refrigerator, but you should never freeze it.
This is the same House Blend found in the Raptis restaurant coffee service. It is a favorite among many customers. The House Blend is a special mix of different Central American coffees air roasted on a Sivetz Fluid Bed roaster.
French Roast is darker than the House Blend but not quite an Espresso. The Fluid Bed roaster is used for this coffee to keep burning chaff off the coffee and preventing the beans from “tipping” or getting burnt against the hot metal walls of a traditional roaster, resulting in a smooth French Roast with a clean finish. Beans that have naturally high acidity are selected, which is one of the first features to be burned off at higher roast temperatures.
